San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León · July 16, 2026 · Mexico City follows in 2027
The Short Version
Chipotle Mexican Grill opened its first restaurant in Mexico on July 16, 2026, in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, inside the Monterrey metro area. It is operated with Alsea, the Latin American restaurant group, under a development agreement signed in April 2025. More Nuevo León restaurants are planned for later in 2026, with Mexico City in 2027. The menu is the familiar burritos, bowls, tacos, salads and quesadillas - with many ingredients sourced regionally.
There is a joke that has followed Chipotle around for three decades: a chain called Mexican Grill, built on burritos and barbacoa, that had never once opened a restaurant in Mexico. As of July 16, 2026, the joke is over.
Chipotle opened its first Mexican location in San Pedro Garza García, an affluent municipality in the Monterrey metro area of Nuevo León. It is a genuinely significant moment for the company - not because one restaurant moves the financial needle, but because of where it is. Here is exactly what opened, why Monterrey, what is on the menu, and where the brand goes next.

One restaurant. That is deliberately the whole plan for now. Chipotle is not carpet-bombing Mexico with locations - it opened a single site and intends to learn from it before scaling. Nate Lawton, the company's Chief Business Development Officer, put it plainly: "Our initial focus is on opening one great restaurant and learning alongside our guests and our partners at Alsea."
The restaurant is run by Alsea, not by Chipotle directly. Alsea operates more than 4,800 units across Latin America and Europe and knows how to run Western restaurant brands in Mexican markets. Chipotle brings the brand and the operating standards; Alsea brings the local execution. The development agreement behind this was announced back in April 2025, so this opening is the first physical result of more than a year of groundwork.
Worth noting: this is a franchise-style partnership, which is unusual for Chipotle. In the US, the company famously owns and operates virtually all of its restaurants rather than franchising them. International markets are where it bends that rule.
On the surface it looks odd. Mexico City is the country's largest market by an enormous margin, and that is exactly why Chipotle did not start there. A first restaurant in CDMX would have been a high-stakes, high-noise debut. Monterrey is the quieter, safer laboratory.
CEO Scott Boatwright cited Monterrey's strong economy and growing population, calling it a major business hub, and added that "our research has reinforced our belief that there is strong interest in high-quality, freshly prepared food."
The specific choice of San Pedro Garza García tells you even more. It is consistently ranked among the wealthiest municipalities in Mexico and in Latin America. For a brand whose entrees sit at a premium to local fast food, that is the most favourable possible starting point - a place where fast-casual pricing is normal and international brands already do well.
Chipotle was founded in Denver in 1993 by Steve Ells, a classically trained chef who borrowed the format from the taquerías of San Francisco's Mission District. It has always been an American interpretation of Mexican food rather than a Mexican restaurant - large burritos, an assembly line, and a menu built for customization rather than tradition.
That distinction matters here. Chipotle is not arriving in Mexico to teach anyone about Mexican food, and its own language reflects that carefully. Boatwright framed the entry this way: "We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country's culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence."
Read that again and you can see the strategy: Chipotle is selling the Chipotle experience - speed, customization, sourcing standards - rather than claiming authenticity. Whether Mexican diners want an Americanized burrito bowl at a premium price is genuinely the open question of this experiment, and it is why one restaurant comes before fifty.
If you want the fuller backstory - the Denver beginnings, the McDonald's investment years, and how the format evolved - we cover it in our Chipotle Mexican Grill company guide.
Structurally, it is the menu you already know. The Mexican restaurant serves freshly prepared burritos, bowls, salads, tacos and quesadillas, made without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives - the same standard Chipotle applies across its US restaurants.
On pricing: Chipotle has not published peso pricing, and we are not going to invent it. What we can tell you is the verified US baseline - a chicken burrito or bowl averages $9.79 nationally. See the full breakdown on our Chipotle menu prices page.
Chipotle and Alsea plan additional restaurants in Nuevo León before the year is out, keeping the first wave inside one state.
The real test. CDMX is the country's biggest and most competitive food market, with an unmatched density of taquerías that do the same thing for a fraction of the price.
The companies say they are evaluating opportunities across Mexico's largest metropolitan markets. Nothing further is committed publicly.
Mexico is one front of a wider push. Chipotle already operates in Canada, Europe and the Middle East, with South Korea and Singapore openings planned, and expects roughly 350-370 new restaurants company-wide in 2026.
Directly, no. Your US menu, your prices and your Chipotle Rewards points are unchanged by a restaurant in Nuevo León. There is no combined loyalty program, and US pricing is set by US market conditions.
Indirectly, it tells you where the company's attention is going. Chipotle has spent years growing mainly by adding US restaurants and raising prices - our own data shows roughly a 15% increase in a chicken burrito since 2022. International expansion is the alternative growth lever. If it works, it takes some of the pressure off US menu prices to do all the heavy lifting. If you are trying to keep your own costs down in the meantime, our 10 ways to save at Chipotle still apply.

Yes. Chipotle opened its first restaurant in Mexico on July 16, 2026, in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, part of the Monterrey metropolitan area. It is the company’s first location in the country in its 33-year history.
The restaurant is in San Pedro Garza García, an affluent municipality inside the Monterrey metropolitan area in the state of Nuevo León. Chipotle has not published a full street address in its announcement.
Chipotle has focused most of its 3,800-plus restaurants on the United States and only recently accelerated international growth. Entering Mexico required a local operating partner, and the company signed a development agreement with Alsea in April 2025 before opening the first restaurant in July 2026.
Alsea (BMV: ALSEA*) is a leading restaurant operator across Latin America and Europe, running more than 4,800 units. Alsea operates the Chipotle restaurant in Mexico under a development agreement, while Chipotle supplies the brand, menu standards and operating model.
Chipotle has not committed to a public total. The stated plan is to open additional restaurants in Nuevo León during 2026, then expand into Mexico City in 2027, with the companies evaluating other large metropolitan markets after that.
The core menu is the same format: burritos, bowls, salads, tacos and quesadillas, prepared without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Chipotle says many ingredients are sourced from suppliers throughout the region, so sourcing is localized even though the menu structure matches the US.
Chipotle has not published Mexican peso pricing, and prices at a single opening location are not a reliable national guide. For US pricing, our verified national averages put a chicken burrito or bowl around $9.79. Expect Mexican pricing to be set locally by Alsea rather than converted from US menus.
CEO Scott Boatwright pointed to Monterrey’s strong economy, growing population and status as a major business hub. San Pedro Garza García is one of the wealthiest municipalities in Mexico, which makes it a low-risk first test market for a premium fast-casual brand.
Beyond the United States, Chipotle operates in Canada, Europe and the Middle East, with openings planned in South Korea and Singapore. Company-wide, Chipotle expects roughly 350 to 370 new restaurants in 2026.
Not directly. US menus, prices and the Chipotle Rewards program are unaffected. The significance is strategic: it signals that Chipotle sees international markets, including the home of the cuisine it sells, as its next growth engine.
